A Personal Learning Plan can make all the difference for successfully learning a language. For that, the plan has to be adapted to your goals and your schedule. Especially if you’re learning alone. Luckily, to make a plan, all you have to do is a bit of reflection and organization. Follow this guide to get started!
6 Steps to Create Your Personal Language Learning Plan
1. Define Your Goals
To begin with, you need to define your goals. What is your primary objective? Why do you want to learn the language that you’ve chosen? Is it to travel, to connect with your family, or even maybe to work in another country? Once you’ve identified your goal, write it down somewhere as proof.
Now, break that goal down into small steps that are easy to achieve. For example, if your goal is to have a basic conversation, one step could be to learn greetings and common expressions. A second step could be to learn to express your feelings and your needs. A third step could be to order meals in the language that you’re learning.
2. Plan Your Learning Sessions
Now it’s time to plan. If you want to succeed, consistency is key! That’s why it’s best to find time where you are free in your weekly schedule. No need to set aside hours at a time, a time window of 15 to 30 minutes per day can make an enormous difference in your learning.
Block out time in your planner or calendar so learning becomes a regular part of your routine. This technique is called “Time Blocking” since you’re blocking out specific times in order to work on an activity, like language learning.
By setting aside those times, you’ll feel more inclined to find a time do dedicate to your language learning. And trying to find time when you’re already busy is an arduous task.
3. Choose Your Learning Tools
Now let’s talk about tools. Everyone learns differently, so it’s important to find what works for you. In this day and age, there are many choices available to you: apps, textbooks, flashcards, videos, podcasts, and more. It’s up to you to find the right fit! Make a list of tools that you’ll use and keep them close at hand.
4. Dedicate Time to Vocabulary
It’s important to dedicate time to learning new words and expressions on a daily basis. Learning and reviewing vocabulary daily is a crucial step to learning a language. Vocabulary is the cornerstone of every language.
Flashcards are excellent tools for memorizing and reviewing vocabulary. And with MosaLingua Premium, you have not only access to all the vocabulary that you need to reach a conversational level in your target language, but you can also create personalized flashcards based on your personal topics of interest. Review them regularly and try to use the new words in sentences to memorize them more easily.
Along with that, the app also personalizes your review sessions. That way, it helps you save time and optimize your results by having you review the content you learned at the most efficient moment. This technique will help you memorize your vocabulary for life!
5. Practice Speaking the Language
Speaking of memorization, don’t forget to practice speaking! Find a penpal, talk to a professor online, or join a language exchange group. Practicing your target language with native speakers will boost your confidence and help you progress faster.
If you’re shy, start by speaking to yourself in the mirror or record yourself. Or even better, practice with an AI tutor so you can have an interaction closer to a real conversation. At MosaLingua, we have MosaChat-AI, a virtual tutor who you can speak to in 10 different languages. Even more, it creates even new flashcards for you when you make a mistake that you want to avoid repeating.
6. Track Your Progress
If you’re learning a language by yourself, it’s also very important to track your progress. Keep a journal of what you’ve learned every week. Celebrate your victories, no matter how small, and reflect on what you could improve. That will keep you motivated and on the right track.
And there you have it: A Personalized Language Learning Plan!
Remember that if you are subscribed to MosaLingua Premium, we’ll send you a Personal Learning Plan. With it, you’ll know what you have to do every day. On top of that, you’ll improve in all the areas you need to master in order to speak your target language.
Don’t forget, learning a language is a journey, not a race. Keep consistent, be patient, and most importantly, have fun!
